Poeta holandés. Además de ser juez y alto funcionario de gobierno, gozaba de gran popularidad como autor de libros de emblemas, que consisten en xilografías o grabados acompañados de un epigrama provisto de una moraleja. Su Spirgel van den ouden en nieuwen tyt [Espejo de los viejos y los nuevos tiempos] (1632) contiene muchas citas que se han convertido en dichos populares en los Países Bajos. En ellos se expresan las preocupaciones éticas de los calvinistas holandeses, especialmente en torno al amor y el matrimonio.
